My film Head Garden will be playing at this year's San Francisco International Animation Festival, which starts tonight. My film plays in the section called Somewhere Where I Don't Know Where I Am, which plays Sunday November 15 at 1:45pm at Landmark's Embarcadero Center Cinema.

The best part of the festival, in my opinion, will be the live animation performance (tonight!) by one of my favorite filmmakers,
Lawrence Jordan. Official info: American underground avant-garde legend Lawrence Jordan will present live animation for the first time in his 50-plus-year career. Manning a 16mm analytic projector, Jordan will improvise the frame rate and rhythm to his cutout short film Ein Traum der liebenden (A Dream of Lovers), based on the live, plaintive musical accompaniment of local duo Pale Hoarse. Wednesday, November 11 at 8pm, at Mezzanine, 444 Jessie Street

citizen jane

I just finished making a new animation called Head Garden that will be screening in the Citizen Jane Film Festival this weekend. My film is playing in the Experimental Animation program curated by Jo Dery. The program also includes animations from the collection of Cecile Starr, and films by Janie Geiser, Laura Heit, Amy Lockhart, Helen Hill, Sabine Gruffat, Jodie Mack, Martha Colburn, Lorelei Pepi, plus a selection of Jo Dery's films. It's such a good program, I wish I could teleport over to Missouri to see it!

the last match

"The Last Match" is an exhibition put together by kuš! comics magazine and took place in Riga, Latvia. The exhibit includes 151 artists from 39 countries who each contributed a piece of artwork the size of a matchbook on the theme "The Last Match". All the pieces are hung on a little match stick stuck into the wall, like in the picture up above. I was happy to have contributed a piece to the show. The exhibition is over now I believe, but there are pictures of all the art made for the show right here, and there's some wonderful stuff.

floor length and tux, tonight!

FLAT (Floor Length And Tux) is an apartment gallery operated by Erik Brown & Catie Olson, and they have invited Alexander Stewart and myself to collaborate on a show with them. In order to come up with the themes for FLAT 3, we followed a stream-of-conversation format that led us to discuss a variety of topics, including ants, vintage Playboy magazines, biodynamic wine making, the 60's sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage, crystalline white blood cells, giant-sized human organs, and isometric cube designs.

We have all contributed new work for this one-night show, including animation, drawings, shadow puppets, and sculpture. Refreshments will be provided. Come join us tonight and tonight only for FLAT 3!

ghost women

At the Chicago Underground Film Festival this year, Jerzy Rose's eerie and beautiful film All Ghost Women Play the Theremin is showing, a short film which I had the honor of playing a little part in. I got to sit and look very concerned in a makeshift hot air balloon with Jared Larson and Chris Sullivan, the best company I can imagine for such an occasion! It's showing at these times in a program called Magic Hands that includes some other really good films and animations too. Also, below is the final poster design I did for the festival... just look at those haunting film reel eyes, become bewitched and go to the festival.

The Problem Fox

My grandma gave me this book, The Problem Fox,
and it has since become one of my favorite picture books.
Here are a few of its curious pages.
